What Copperplate does ¶
Copperplate helps graduate students, early-career researchers and publishing academics improve work they have written and data they have collected. We edit manuscripts, theses and dissertations. We consult on statistical and qualitative analysis. We coach writers through long projects, support systematic reviews and prepare papers for journal submission.
Everything we do starts from your draft, your data and your argument. Our job is to show you where the writing or the analysis can be stronger and to explain why, so the finished work is better and you understand every change in it.
Why we are called Copperplate ¶
Copperplate is the formal script that eighteenth- and nineteenth-century engravers cut into copper plates to print writing manuals, certificates and fine stationery. Every stroke was deliberate, and every flourish served the reader.
We chose the name because that is how we edit: with precision, patience and respect for the original hand. The changes are ours to suggest; the voice and the ideas stay yours. Even our colors come from the engraver’s desk: copper, walnut, sand, ivory and charcoal.
Our mission ¶
Good research deserves to be read and understood. Many strong studies are held back by unclear prose, inconsistent formatting, shaky statistical reporting or the plain difficulty of writing in a second language. We exist to remove those obstacles without taking the work out of the researcher's hands.
We aim to leave every client a little more skilled than before. A margin comment that explains a tense choice or a reporting convention is something you can apply to the next chapter yourself.
How we work with researchers ¶
Every project follows the same calm, predictable process, described in full on how it works:
- You send your file and a short brief through the quote form.
- We confirm the scope, the deadline and a quote before any work begins.
- An editor or consultant who knows your field takes on the project.
- You receive the edited file or analysis notes, with every change visible and explained.
- You ask follow-up questions until the comments make sense to you.
We would rather ask a clarifying question at the start than guess at what you need.
The six standards behind every project ¶
These commitments apply to every service we offer:
- Visible, explained edits. Edits come back in Track Changes, with margin comments that explain the reasoning behind substantive changes.
- Field-matched editors. Your editor is matched to your discipline, so terminology, methods and conventions are read by someone who knows them.
- Confidential handling. Your files are treated as confidential. An NDA is available on request, and we delete files when you ask.
- Your authorship stays yours. We edit, explain, analyze and coach. We never write work for you to submit as your own.
- Follow-up questions. After delivery you can ask your editor about any comment or change.
- Flexible turnaround. Options run from 24 hours to 7 days, depending on length.

Our commitment to academic integrity ¶
Integrity is the foundation of our work. Editing and coaching help you present your own ideas well. They never replace your thinking or your writing.
